It’s a frontpiece illustration from the original Dore’-illustrated Rabelais, referencing, I think, chapter three of the book of Pantagruel, titled, “Of the grief wherewith Gargantua was moved at the decease of his wife Badebec.” Obviously, the image as appropriated for The Myth has nothing whatever to do with this original context, and I will coyly refrain from offering my take on the “recontextualized” meaning. I go with my instincts, and it seemed to fit.
